Description

A double wall Travel Mug keeps drinks hot or cold by minimising heat transfer through the three main methods. It works even better with vacuum insulation. These methods consist of the following: conduction, convection, and radiation. The design creates a barrier between the drink and the outside environment, slowing down the temperature change.

How the double wall design works
  1. Conduction block
  • Conduction explained: This is the transfer of heat through direct contact. In a regular travel mug, heat from a hot drink transfers to the cup’s inner wall. Travels through the solid material, and radiates out from the outer surface.
  • The double wall’s role: A double-walled travel mug or bottle has an inner wall and an outer wall separated by a space. With nothing solid connecting the two layers, heat cannot easily travel from the inner wall to the outer wall.
  1. Convection prevention
  • Convection explained: This is the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, like air or water. In a single-walled vessel. The air around a hot travel cup cup heats up, rises, and is replaced by cooler air. Creating a convection current that carries heat away.
  • The double wall’s role: In high-quality insulated bottles, the air between the inner and outer walls is removing to create a vacuum. A vacuum is an empty space with no air molecules. Since convection requires a medium (like air) to transfer heat. The vacuum prevents heat from escaping (or entering) the bottle through convection.
  1. Radiation reflection
  • Radiation explained: Heat transfer through electromagnetic waves, even in a vacuum. An object’s radiant heat can be absorbed by its surroundings.
  • The double wall’s role: The inner and outer walls of many double-walled vessels have a reflective coating, often metallic. This mirrored surface reflects the infrared radiation from the hot liquid back toward the drink. And reflects external heat away from cold drinks
