Everyday Carry an Utility Blade
Carrying a utility knife ensures you always have a consistently razor-sharp tool on hand without the hassle of sharpening. It is highly prized for daily tasks like breaking down boxes, opening stubborn packaging, and handling tough materials. This is likely the main reason why people EDC a utility blade. There is obviously other reason for doing so as well.

Practical benefits of keeping a utility knife in your everyday carry (EDC) include:
- Zero Maintenance: Instead of whetstones or honing, you simply replace or flip the standard blade when it dulls. Replacement blades are incredibly cheap and widely available.
- Preserves Primary Blades: Using a utility blade for abrasive or sticky tasks protects your more expensive folding pocket knives from chipping, adhesive buildup, or rapid edge degradation. Works well to lend it to that buddy of yours that always cut the meat on the braai….
- Travel-Friendly: Many folding utility knives (like the highly popular Gerber Prybrid) allow you to remove the blade entirely before a flight. You can throw the handle in your carry-on and buy a new pack of standard blades upon arrival.
- Discreet and Lightweight: These knives feature slim profiles that fit comfortably in a coin pocket or on a keychain (as an example: Nitecore NTK09) without adding the bulk of a traditional heavy folder.

Many modern utility knives go a step further. Integrating additional practical features like bottle openers, bit drivers, and small pry bars. Although there are mixed feelings about the bottle opener on a utility blade, when you can do this with a pry bar as well, it seems to be a nice-to-have… or maybe a sort off “Tacti-Cool”…
