Behind the Name: KA-BAR
The name “KA-BAR” originates from a letter sent to the Union Cutlery Company (now KA-BAR Knives, Inc.) in the early 1920s. A fur trapper recounted that his gun jammed while being attacked by a wounded bear, forcing him to use his Union Cutlery knife to “kill a bear”. Due to the trapper’s rough English and handwriting, the phrase looked like “ka bar”, which the company adopted as a trademark.
